I was at it again last night, testing out a nice tortilla recipe for you all. The results were great and inspired me to share some instruction on how to make homemade tortillas.
As a big fan of tortillas, when I think of all the money I spend buying those ready made ones, it makes me shudder. Especially now I have mastered this flour tortilla recipe.
Summary: A fantastic tortilla recipe for making homemade flour tortillas
Ingredients
2 cups plain flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
2 teaspoons oil
3/4 cup milk
Instructions
- Mix the flour, salt, garlic salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.
- Slightly warm the milk before adding the oil. Give this a little whisk.
- Slowly add the milk to the flour mix, working it into a dough. I always start by using a fork until the mix gets too sticky then it's time for the hands!
- Dust your surface with flour and knead the dough well. Form into a big ball.
- Cover the dough and leave to rest for 10-15 mins.
- Divide your dough into balls of equal size and then pat them down into little 'flats'. Cover them and let them rest again for about 10 minutes.
- Roll each flat dough into the shape you require. This is the hasrdest part as the dough likes to retain its shape! Once flat enough, place a plate of the required size for your frying pan over the tortilla and cut around with a sharp knife.
- When you have your tortilla ready, throw it in a hot pan, with the smallest drop of oil and cook for about 45 seconds each side, or until they bubble up nicely.
- Serve immediately for best results, though they will keep in the freezer if you make too many.
- You should get about 10 thin flour tortillas from this recipe!
